The Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (SOPNG) celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday, 21 March 2026, at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).
SOPNG, in collaboration with Y-Peer Papua New Guinea, hosted the event, which brought together more than 50 participants, including athletes with Down syndrome, volunteers, students, parents, caregivers, and partners.
The participants proudly wore mismatched socks in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day through the “Lots of Socks” campaign, aligning with the global theme: “Together Against Loneliness.”
This initiative highlights the importance of breaking barriers and fostering a community where individuals with Down syndrome are included, valued, and celebrated.
The meaning behind the “Lots of Socks” campaign is simple yet powerful: mismatched socks may look different, but they share the same value, they can be worn, they belong, and they serve a purpose.
In the same way, people with Down syndrome may be born different, but they have equal worth, dignity, and value, just like anyone else.
SOPNG acknowledged the partners that supported the organization in observing World Down Syndrome Day over the weekend.
“We sincerely acknowledge Y-Peer Papua New Guinea for the opportunity to collaborate,” the statement read.
“A very big thank you to our sponsors, Nestlé PNG Sampling Team, and Paradise Foods Limited, for supporting the event with refreshments.
“We also extend our appreciation to the distinguished guests from the United Nations Human Rights Office and to the University of Papua New Guinea for hosting the event.
“Let’s continue to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and stand together to create a world where everyone truly feels they belong.”
