South City Rams rammed 54 Bears to clinch NCD Governor’s Cup

Updated: 1 day ago

The South City Rams emerged with a resounding 36-6 victory over the 54 Bears to claim the 2025-2026 NCD Governor’s Cup on Saturday, 10th January 2026, at Konedobu’s Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby.

Both teams fielded a couple of experienced Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup players and emerging talents, making the grand final a highly anticipated match to watch as the players rose to the occasion and competed for the ultimate prize.

There were high emotions and physical exchanges in the opening ten minutes of the contest as the two sides settled into the game and tried to find their rhythm. The brutal 10 minutes of the clash were marred with errors.

However, the 54 Bears made a silly mistake in their red zone territory, and the Rams capitalized and punished the Bears with the first 4-pointer through the hat-trick hero and electric fullback, Jeremiah Ben.

Following that try by Ben, the match turned into a one-way traffic contest as the Rams revved up their engine and scored two well-executed tries, dominating the first half proceedings and taking a comfortable 16-0 lead over the Bears.

At the resumption, the Rams wasted no time and hit their straps running, with Jeremiah Ben crossing over the line for his second try and putting the South side men on the front foot and increasing their lead to 22-0.

Moments later, the Bears responded with their first 4-pointer. However, their celebration was short-lived as the Rams quickly swung the momentum and ran rings around the Waigani men, registering three additional tries and blowing the Bears off the park.

Rams’ sensational fullback, Jeremiah Ben’s masterclass performance powered the Konedobu side to championship glory. Young Ben bagged 3 tries, assisted a couple, amassed over 100 meters, and walked away with the MVP award.

An elated South City Rams’ coach, Steven Moihoi Jack, stated that he had confidence and faith in his players, trusting them fully to deliver the result, which they pulled off and made their families, sponsors, and Konedobu community proud.

“The performance was up to what we were building from day one of the training leading up to the playoffs and grand final. It all came to perfection in the big dance, so I’m happy as a coach,” Moihoi Jack said.

“The boys have committed their time and sacrificed a lot over the last three weeks, so their hard work has paid off. I had a hundred percent belief in the players to get the job done, so I give full credit to them.”

Coach Moihoi Jack acknowledged the Moresby South MP, Honorable Justin Tkatchenko, for his full support since day one. He also extended the team’s gratitude to patron Angobe Urubi’s leadership, including the support from their families and fans, and dedicated the title to the Konedobu community.

In addition, this was the Rams’ first time to participate in the annual NCD Governor’s Cup Rugby League tournament. They came with a goal and accomplished their mission, winning the coveted trophy and pocketing the lucrative K100,000 prize money.

Meanwhile, the Kapomanda Ipi Park Sisters were crowned the Women’s Cup Champions after a hard-fought 12-8 victory over Tobalu Sisters. The Manuti Raiders claimed the Men’s Plate division, and the Gerehu Young Guns won the Women’s Plate title.
