Solu Hopeful to Make an Impact

Hela Wigmen hooker Trevor Solu will be looking to secure his spot with the SP PNG Hunters next year after being ruled out for an injury this season.

Joining the 2025 extended squad’s pre-season camp, Solu said this year was tough for him after sustaining a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, which prompted him to return to the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup and complete the season.

“To be honest, I struggled with my games this season after sustaining a PCL injury and had to go through rehabilitation. However, returning to the Hunters pre-season camp is an opportunity I’m grateful for and willing to make the most of it,” Solu said.

Solu, who made his debut for the Hunters in 2023, appeared in 8 matches and despite being named in the 30-man squad this season, he was only able to make 1 appearance before sustaining an injury.

He said with fellow hunters’ teammate Judah Rimbu off to the United Kingdom for a stint with the Castleford Tigers in the Super League, there are big shoes to fill.

“Judah was great for the team (Hunters) and PNG Kumuls this year, which earned him a great opportunity to play overseas and he should be proud of his efforts,” Solu said.

“With him gone now leaves the coaches to find a replacement for the role. For the young players coming in for this role also gives me a challenge to work extra hard and try to grab that opportunity with both hands.

“My late dad was my strongest motivator and supporter, so even giving up after that injury is not an option.”

Meanwhile, he said it was great to see more young talents being introduced into the 2025 preseason camp, including Wigmen teammate Murray Connors, who has been dominant in the DEM Cup.

“It will be a great boost for the team (Hunters) if they recruit some of these fresh talents coming through from this year’s competition,” said Solu.
