POM Women’s Softball Association Gears for Preseason Finals

The Port Moresby Women’s Softball Association (POMWSA) started its preseason competition three weeks ago and is looking forward to hosting finals on Saturday, December 14th, 2024, at Softball Diamonds Park.

Seven female teams comprising Chebu, Mariners, Moni Plus, Gazelle, Saints, Stingers, Tribes Bears, and United Sisters are competing in the preseason competition.

POMWSA President, Carol Apelis said the purpose of hosting the preseason was to raise awareness on cancer and get more female players to join the competition as the season proper draws closer.

“This 2024-2025 preseason would have gotten our club affiliates to recruit more players onto the diamonds and therefore, a whole month of preseason striking out cancer - “Pink in November,” Apelis explained.

“Depending on the players’ registration and capabilities of ensuring they have both A & B Grades, we should have the season proper starting soon.”

Apelis, who was recently appointed as POMWSA President, replacing Ian Soweni, highlighted some of the strategies and plans she and her executives would implement in terms of unearthing raw talents.

“Our young innovative executives are working hard to ensure we cultivate and introduce new talents as softball has been struggling in the past decade and therefore, our priority as executives in our term is to sustainably develop the code,” she stressed.

“We are also working towards compliance requirements to the PNG Baseball and Softball Confederation calendar of having a club championship next year.”

Additionally, she urged any female who has an interest in playing softball to head over to the softball diamonds this weekend (December 14) and join any team of their choosing to participate in the finals.
