The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) launched its Gender Equality Strategy (GES) today, Thursday, 15 January 2026, at Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.
The PNGRFL has collaborated with the PNG NRL Academy over the past few months to help develop the GES concept, which culminated in its official launch today.
PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina, newly appointed CEO of PNG Chiefs Lorna McPherson, Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald, General Manager Pathways & Performance Tony Archer, and players attended the GES launch.
The PNG NRL Academy expressed satisfaction with the GES launch, acknowledging the PNGRFL for its strong partnership and support.
“For the past few months, the PNG NRL Academy has worked alongside the PNGRFL to help develop the PNGRFL Gender Equality Strategy, and we were proud to take part in its official launch today in Port Moresby,” the statement said.
“We’re excited to be part of this important work moving forward, contributing across all four areas through our Academy pathways.”
This world-first strategy will help advance gender equality in rugby league through activities across four key thematic areas:
Participation (including coaching)
Leadership
Visibility (including media)
Safe and respectful environments
The Australian Government is supporting this initiative through the PNG Rugby League Pathway Development Program, working in partnership with PNGRFL and stakeholders to build stronger foundations for young athletes' active participation in the sport.
