Papua New Guinea triumphed over the Solomon Islands with a 5-0 drubbing in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup Women’s Semifinal clash today (20th November 2025) at PNG Football Stadium, Port Moresby.
After 20 minutes of physical contest, Serah Waida struck a loose ball outside of the 30-meter yard to put PNG on the scoreboard. A few minutes later, goal-scoring ace Marie Kaipu assisted skipper Ramona Padio, with PNG taking a 2-0 lead at the break.
Just under 10 minutes of play in the second half, midfielder Padio scored her second goal and extended PNG’s lead to 3-0. In the final 20 minutes, Nanny Elipas and Keren Kalapai registered a goal each to put the game beyond doubt.
Though the Solomon Islanders had a couple of chances to mount a comeback, PNG’s relentless defense kept turning the visitors away. The home side held the visitors scoreless to book their spot in the decider.
PNG coach Erickson Komeng lauded the team’s dominant and clinical performance, with PNG becoming the first team to advance to the inaugural grand final edition of the women’s tournament on home soil.
“The Solomon Islands are a quality side, but we came here to beat them. The girls (PNG) played quality football and came up with 5 goals. The girls deserved the win, and we’ll go back and work on a few things to prepare for the grand final,” Komeng said.
With a 48-hour rest before the big dance, coach Komeng noted that the team doctors would work with the players who have minor injuries and prepare them for the biggest stage, with the team setting their sights on claiming regional glory.
Meanwhile, Vanuatu and Fiji are currently playing to fight for a spot in the decider, with the winner to face PNG on Sunday (23rd November).
