Papua New Guinea began their title defense with a thrilling 2-1 win over the courageous Samoan girls on the opening day of the 2025 OFC Women’s Nations Cup on Friday, June 4th, at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Fiji.
Experienced prolific goal scorer Marie Kaipu’s double in the opening half helped PNG secure their first victory of the tournament, giving them a head start, as they look forward to defending the cup they won in 2022.
A stacked PNG outfit going up against an emerging Samoan side was predicted to be a one-way traffic contest, but the spirited Samoan girls rose to the challenge and fought until the final whistle.
With this crucial win, PNG will rest for two days (Saturday & Sunday) to recover and meet Tahiti on Monday, July 7th.
