PNG Esports ready to shock the world at the Esports Nations Cup Qualifiers

History will be written on the digital battlefield as the Papua New Guinea Esports Association (PNGEA) prepares to participate in the Southeast Asia/Oceania Esports Nations Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for 11-12 July 2026.

The PNG Esports Association officially announced its Player Unknown Battle Ground (PUBG Mobile) National Team, comprising six players. This is the first-ever PNG select side under the PNGEA to compete in the tournament.

PNG, the only country representing the South Pacific to compete in the qualifiers, will go head-to-head with some of the well-established, heavily funded esports powerhouses in Asia.

With high-stakes, fiercely competitive regional qualifiers, only two spots are available to advance to the Esports Nations Cup finals, which will be hosted in Saudi Arabia later this year.

PNG Esports Association President Peter Bray highlighted the significance of the event: “This isn’t just a milestone for PNG. It is a monumental moment for the entire region.

“PNG has secured a monumental achievement by becoming the only country in the South Pacific to earn a spot in these highly competitive Southeast Asia qualifiers.

“When our players drop into the arena this weekend, they aren't just carrying the hopes of a nation; they are carrying the pride of the entire Pacific region.”

President Bray mentioned that the players were ready to fly out, noting that due to a lack of sponsorship from companies, especially esports stakeholders, the team would not attend the event in Singapore and Sydney.

However, he said the six players will play virtually via the PNG Sports Foundation Indoor Complex internet connection.

Bray explained that some of the world's top PUBG players would be competing, noting that they needed to refine their gaming skills and prepare for the battle on the weekend.

“Make no mistake, our team is entering as the ultimate underdogs, but in esports, strategy, raw skill, and fearless teamwork dictate the victor, not history,” he said.

“The PNG squad is locked in and ready to give these veteran nations an absolute run for their money.”

President Bray added that a lucrative cash prize is up for grabs: “If you think this is just a game, think again.

"The event offers staggering financial rewards. The PUBG Mobile division of the tournament features a massive dedicated prize pool of $1,320,000.

“This is part of a monumental, larger $45 million global ecosystem committed to national teams, player payouts, and developmental infrastructure.

“For our local players, this isn't just about regional pride; it's a life-changing opportunity to secure world-class rewards and put Pacific Esports firmly on the map.”

He urged the followers and non-followers of esports to rally behind Team PNG and tune in to watch the world’s best gamers put on a show for two days.

“If you’ve never watched an esports tournament before, there has never been a better time to start,” Bray said.

“The fast-paced, high-octane action of PUBG Mobile is a true test of split-second reflexes, tactical genius, and intense communication.

“Watching our national team navigate these high-stakes matches offers every bit of the adrenaline, heartbreak, and triumph found in traditional sports.

“This is our chance to show the world the untapped potential of Pacific gaming talent. Don't miss a single second of the action as PNG fights for a spot on the world stage.”

PUBG Mobile is the biggest Esports Game in the world right now. The Esports Nations Cup is the biggest tournament, with over 50 countries competing for the ultimate prize.
