PNG Bilums remain unbeaten to top Pool B

Updated: 20 minutes ago

The PNG Bilums pulled off a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Fiji Kulas in the final match of the FIFA World Cup Women’s Oceania Qualifiers on Sunday, 8 March 2026, at Govind Park in Ba, Fiji.

PNG was scheduled to meet Fiji in the opening round on Tuesday (March 2nd). However, due to adverse weather conditions, the game was postponed to Sunday, where the Bilums edged past the Bulas.

With both teams boasting quality players, it was difficult to find the back of the net, despite a few chances being created. The players displayed skill, grit, and determination, leaving the score sheet clean at half-time.

The seesawing affair peaked in the second half as the two sides showed desperation in trying to break the deadlock. A couple of goal-scoring opportunities went begging for either side, thanks to their impregnable defense.

As the minutes wore down, Mavis Singara dribbled past two defenders to assist Meagen Gunemba, who scored the match-winner in the 86th minute in an evenly-fought contest.

PNG and Fiji finished first and second, respectively, in Pool B, with both teams looking ahead to join New Zealand and American Samoa in Round 3 of the FIFA World Cup 2027 Women’s Oceania Qualifiers to be staged in New Zealand in mid-April.

Group B Standings:

  1. PNG - 9 points

  2. Fiji - 6 points

  3. New Caledonia - 3 points

  4. Vanuatu - 0
