Papua New Guinea’s new “Sprint King” Pais Wisil has qualified to participate in his first-ever Commonwealth Games, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Wisil has had an outstanding year on the track, breaking national records and winning the Male Athlete of the Year and People’s Choice Award at the 34th SP Sports Awards this year.
The sprint sensation shattered a 30-year national record in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 10.24 seconds, breaking Peter Pulu's 1995 benchmark. He also set a new national indoor 60-meter standard of 6.64 seconds in Canberra, Australia.
Following those sterling performances across the domestic, regional, and international competitions, he has ultimately earned a spot in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Wisil expressed sincere gratitude for his selection to the Commonwealth Games and thanked those who have played a part in his elevation to the global event.
“It's official,” the elated, soft-spoken Jiwaka lad wrote on his Facebook account.
“I'm going to my first Commonwealth Games for the 100m and 4 x 100m relay. It's been a really consistent season for me, and I'm blessed to be rewarded for that.
“Adrine Monagi (100m hurdles Team PNG) and Winzar Kakiouea (100m) for Team Nauru will join me. I am so excited.
“Thank you to all my team who helped me behind the scenes, and all my squad for your support.”
