Gerega Sets New PNG Record

Papua New Guinea men’s javelin sensation, Lakona Gerega, has set a new national record on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, Australia, throwing 72.26 meters and becoming the first man to break his previous record.
Gerega threw the javelin 72.26m to break the national record for the tenth time in his career. His new mark is a 3.35m improvement on his previous record of 68.91m set in the Oceania Cup in Tonga last year.
The Central man is a premier track and field athlete who is widely regarded as one of the most decorated throwers in the Pacific, and has consistently set the standard for javelin in Papua New Guinea.
Gerega holds the Papua New Guinea national record in the men's javelin, with impressive throws continuing to push past the 68-meter mark.
He has proudly represented Team PNG at multiple major regional and global events, including the Commonwealth Games, the Pacific Games, and the Pacific Mini Games.
The prolific javelin thrower is a consistent standout at the Oceania Athletics Championships, regularly finishing near the top of the podium against top competitors from across the region.
