The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has successfully completed a one-day Community Sports Program finals for the three electorates in the city at Murray Barracks AFL Oval on Friday, 26th January, in Port Moresby.
The NCD Community Sports Program started mid-last year. The concept was initiated by the NCDC Sports Division to engage the youths with sports to help them stay away from criminal activities and other bad habits. The big picture is to change the people’s mindset through sports.
It also aims to provide opportunities for the youths to expose their hidden raw talents and create spin-off benefits for the Small-to-Medium-Enterprises (SMEs).
Top-four teams from each district in the nation’s capital were selected to take part in the finals. The finalists competed in basketball, volleyball, netball, touch rugby and soccer.
The Coordinator for North-West and Assistant Coordinator for the event, Simon Nuabo, said that although they started the games a little bit late, they were satisfied in completing the event successfully.
“We started late but we completed everything on time. We are happy to finish the games on a positive note,” Nuabo said.
Mr. Nuabo added that the Community Sports Program would be an annual event and look forward to making it become bigger and better next year.
“We have started this program mid-last year and will host it every year. We want to make it bigger and better next year,” he said.
Meanwhile, the intention of initiating the Community Sports Program is to focus at the ward level, LLG level, district level and eventually at the national level. The program has slowly gained momentum and they wanted to expand it in the coming years.
