The National Capital District School Rugby League (NCDSRL) competition commenced its 2025 season two weekends ago and completed its round 2 over the weekend (April 27th).
This season features U15, U16, U17, U18, and U19 divisions for both boys and girls comprising the Port Moresby North-East, North-West, and South electorates, totaling 38 teams with a thirteen-week competition.
The boys' competition was hosted at three different venues - Gerehu Secondary School field, Taurama Barracks, and Bomana CIS field - while the girls' competition was held at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
Finals format will see the top 8 teams competing for the top honors in their respective pools. Fifteen grand finals were staged last season, but the organizing committee planned to trim down the finals to five this year.
The NCDSRL is sanctioned by PNGRFL and is affiliated with the NCDC Vipers. It’s a development pathway for the students to further their careers in the Vipers Academy, progress to the Digicel Cup, and hopefully join the new PNG NRL team in 2028.
Most of the officials are teachers from various schools in NCD committing their time to officiate the games, mentor, and guide the players on and off the field, as well as in the classrooms.
NCD School Rugby League competition Secretary Nere Moli gave an update on the competition, highlighting the plans for the 2025 season while acknowledging NCDC and PNGRFL for their backing.
“We started round 1 two weekends ago and completed our round 2 today (April 27th),” Moli said.
“We will not be able to run our competition without the support of our sponsors, so we would like to thank NCDC and PNGRFL for their continued support over the years.
“It will be another challenging season for us, but we remain committed to finishing everything on a successful note.”
As the season progresses, the excitement is building up, aiming to deliver a thrilling and competitive season for the NCD School Rugby League competition.
