New Ireland’s Namatanai District kicked off its Provincial Rugby League 9s Tournament at Namatanai Town Oval yesterday (13th November 2025). The tournament continues today (14th November) and will end tomorrow (15th November).
The tournament features 20 senior men’s teams across the province competing for provincial glory, with a grand prize money of K30,000 up for grabs, ranging from K10,000 (1st) K7,500 (2nd), K5,000 (3rd), and K2,500 (4th).
Hosting the event brings the community together for a shared, entertaining experience, as seen with the excitement and emotions shown by New Irelanders during past tournaments. It fosters the development of rugby league at a provincial level by providing a competitive tournament among teams from different districts.
This event is funded by the Namatanai Open Member, Hon. Walter Schnaubelt, through the Namatanai Special Events Council for the advancement of youth, sports and provincial community development aspirations.
Delegations from the PNG Rugby Football League, PNG Sports Foundation, and East New Britain Government, accompanied by one of New Ireland’s prominent leaders and Santos Country Chairman, Leon Buskens, arrived in Kavieng today (14th November) to witness the tournament.
This event marks yet another important milestone demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting long-term Provincial Sports Development Strategy and the purpose of value creation and building foundations for sustainability.
The Namatanai 9s tournament was created to promote community spirit through sports, scout talented players for elite teams, and provide entertainment for the residents. The event serves as a platform for local players to showcase their skills.
