Murray Connors Growing in Confidence

The SP PNG Hunters’ booming second-rower, Murray Fige Connors, has taken his game to new heights following an impressive debut last season.

Heading into his second season with the Hunters, Connors said he had learned so much in the last three months of preseason training, showing enthusiasm for improvement.

“The preseason has been good. The energy the new boys bring in sort of challenges us, the old boys. I’m working on improving myself and keeping up with the intensity,” he stated.

He added that communication is important in the team, saying: “We have to work on our communication.

"Transitioning from Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup to the Hunters is a bit challenging, but as we go along, communication will help us perform well.”

During the holiday break, the towering back-rower got involved with his local club, the Toks NEST team in the NCD Governor’s Cup, providing mentorship and guidance to young players.

Connors mentioned that life outside of footy had been great as he continues to work on himself to become a better player and a good role model to his community.

“Life outside of footy is okay. It’s pretty challenging, but at some stage, I try my best to manage it,” the soft-spoken athlete said.

He further said he had made strides since last year and wanted to lead by example this season, passing his game knowledge to the new players in the Hunters’ system, especially those who play in his preferred position.

The Central-Eastern Highlands lad admitted that it’s not guaranteed for him to make the final cut, noting that every player in the squad is working hard to secure their spots in the top 30 list.

“It’s always challenging to make it into the final squad, so you have to be the best to be in the Hunters," he stated.

"It demands a lot of sacrifices, not just here but back home, doing extras just to be able to maintain and stay in the Hunters. It’s very challenging, but enjoyable."

With the upcoming World Cup, Connors hopes to have a solid campaign for the Hunters this season and represent the PNG Kumuls on the international stage.

“My goal this year is to be the best version of myself every day, and if it’s God’s will, then I would love to wear the Kumuls’ jersey,” he revealed.
