Goroka MP Honorable Aiye Tambua committed a resounding K100,000.00 to the Goroka Soccer Association (GSA) over the weekend.
From the commitment, a cheque of K25,000.00 was handed over to the new GSA President Coffman Alexander Menz, and his executives.
Tambua said that the funding would be given in tranches of K25,000.00 following acquittals from the initial funding.
He then challenged the GSA executives to enter a team in the National Premier League and stated that Goroka District would be the major sponsor.
Hon. Tambua said he had already shown the same support for other sports in the district, but he was particular about soccer because it is a global sport.
Menz responded that a 'Strategic Plan' for the next four years had already been laid out and would be concentrating on a holistic approach to youth development in soccer.
“Balancing children’s education with soccer and the instilling of values. As part of the strategic vision, GSA is pushing to acquire land to set up an academy in the Highlands of PNG and to cater for skills development of coaches, referees, and of course, our Goroka-based player pool,” Menz said.
A total of 16 clubs have registered for the 2025 season, including six institutional clubs, representing the University of Goroka and one from the Goroka Technical College.
FC NSI is the newest residential club to register for the 2025 season while the rest are seasoned residential clubs within Goroka District.
Divisions from U10, U13, and Masters will play Futsal while the U16 and U19, Senior Men’s and Women’s divisions play the 11-a-side competition.
