The Mosama FC edged out the Tupuru FC with an extra-time penalty shootout of 4-3 scoreline in the Women’s Grand Final to claim the 2025 NCD Governor’s Cup Soccer Tournament title on Tuesday, 30th December, at UPNG Vice-Chancellor’s Oval.
With both teams setting their sights on clinching the cup and prize money, they rose to the challenge and competed fiercely against each other, with Tupuru taking a 1-0 lead at half-time.
At the resumption, Tupuru maintained their intensity and put Mosama under immense pressure. However, the eventual champions swung the momentum and scored an equalizer, forcing the decider to extra time.
The two sides shifted into second gear in the extra time, showing desperation to put the game beyond doubt. However, neither team could break the deadlock, pushing the game to a penalty shootout, where Mosama emerged victorious with a 4-3 win.
Mosama FC coach, John Robert, stated that it was a tough and thrilling match, crediting his girls for their resilience and making a late comeback to steal the win from the determined Tupuru side.
“We struggled in the first half but regrouped in the second half and forced the game to extra time to beat Tupuru. I am proud of my girls who showed the fighting spirit to get the job done,” he said.
Coach Robert acknowledged the sponsors, the players, and team management. He also thanked the fans for their support, which motivated the players to give their best and clinch the championship.
Mosama FC, being the first-timers in the 2025 NCD Governor’s soccer tournament, came with a mission and stole the spotlight, walking away with the coveted trophy and lucrative prize money.
The Director of NCD Governor’s Cup, Billy Aki, witnessed the grand finals of both men’s and women’s games, thanking all the participating teams, the tournament coordinators, and the football community in NCD for their support.
Meanwhile, the presentations for both soccer and rugby league tournaments will be held at Konedobu’s Sir Hubert Murray Stadium after the rugby league grand final games.
