MBB Marlins start pre-season strong

Updated: Apr 27

The MBB Marlins successfully kicked off their pre-season challenge by defeating the Uni Piggies with a 15-7 victory in the Pepsi Capital Rugby Union (CRU) Open Men's encounter on Saturday, April 6th, 2024, at Bava Park in Port Moresby.

MBB Marlins captain, Willie Keai, was pleased with the win and credited his teammates for sticking with the game plan.

"It went according to plan, and we executed our game plan excellently," said Captain Keai.

Keai mentioned that the club’s preparation had been going well.

“We have many new players who have joined the club and integrated seamlessly with the team,” he said.

Keai explained that the new players joining the club were from outside centres and resided in the Gerehu suburb, giving them the opportunity to join the team, which the team was privileged to have.

"We have been focusing on the upcoming CRU season. We started preparing early in the year, back in February,” he said.

Captain Keai mentioned that areas they needed to work on includes building a strong defensive pack, improving ball handling errors, and strengthening their attacking forward pack, which was lacking in the previous season, 2023.

They are gradually improving their forward pack and are looking forward to the upcoming season.

"We are still gaining momentum, as shown by the team in the match against the Piggies,” he said.

Keai also said the Piggies were a tough team to play against.

"They are a legacy club with experienced and star players, so they gave us a tough and competitive challenge,” he said.
