The stage is set for the Port Moresby Australian Rules Football League (AFL) Women’s Grand Final showdown when the reigning champions Gerehu Magpies go head-to-head with the newcomers Skyroos on Saturday, September 13th, 2025, at Colts Oval.
Gerehu Magpies, who are the regular contenders in the women’s division, edged the West Eagles last season in the decider to claim the premiership, and are looking forward to going back-to-back this season.
Conversely, the Skyroos entered the POM AFL competition this season and immediately made their presence felt, aspiring to stun the defending champions (Gerehu Magpies) and clinch the coveted title in their rookie season.
Gerehu Magpies’ coach and club owner Rachael Ravu Talania mentioned that she was proud of her girls, who she had mentored on the streets of Gerehu, having no doubts that they would go all the way to finish the job.
“I am really happy to lead the girls back to the grand final. Seeing and working with the girls means a lot to me…when you put your heart and soul into it. We’ve come this far and displayed another skillful and talented game of football,” she stated.
“I had no doubts about my girls because they were not plucked out from anywhere; they are from Gerehu, and they are home-grown. They grew up in front of me - seeing them around in the streets, encouraging them, and getting them this far - is a wonderful feeling.
“As for myself, being the mother of Gerehu Magpies, I am speechless. But I am happy, excited and proud of my girls to make it this far again for the 2025 POM AFL grand final. I know for sure and have trust in these girls to get the job done.”
Captain Monica Api added: “Our preparations have been good. We have trained hard, knowing that the Skyroos will come strong. We won last year and have faith that we will win again this year.”
Skyroos’ rookie coach Chevalier Ujari said though they are a first-time participant in the competition, he believes his girls have what it takes to go all the way to create history for the club.
“I am very proud of our effort and how far we have come. I am happy that we have reached the grand final because it’s a new team in the POM AFL. We want to create history by winning the grand final in our first season,” the confident coach expressed.
Skyroos’ captain Monica Tindipu added: “We played strongly and made our way to the grand final. We lost to the Magpies 3 times this season and are aiming for revenge. We defeated the West Eagles in a tough match last weekend and are ready to meet the Magpies in the grand final."
The Magpies will field the same players from last season, except for the inclusion of an emerging player to bolster their pack, while the Skyroos have a very young side led by skipper Tindipu, who are hoping to cause an upset and create history for the debuting club.
