Lau Finding His Feet

Joshua Lau was integral to the SP PNG Hunters’ surge to the 2024 QRL Hostplus Cup Preliminary Final, but sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the match against the Sunshine Coast Falcons in September, which saw him miss most of the 2025 season.

After almost eight months of rehabilitation, Lau returned to the field from the bench in round 14 this year against the visiting Brisbane Tigers, and also played in rounds 16, 17, and 18 as the starting five-eight for the Hunters.

Returning from injury to build combinations with his teammates has been a challenge for Lau, especially in the halves department, but he has grown in confidence over the last four games and is slowly picking up his form.

“It’s been really challenging coming back from injury and trying to lead the team. I just came back from injury and am trying to pick up my form. Our season is on the line, but it’s healthy for the team,” Lau said.

“My body is alright. I’m improving every game and trying to get better. We were off for two weeks, which really helped me to fully recover. Coming back from rehab has been challenging, but I’m slowly hitting my form again.”

Lau added that his combination with new halves partner, Finley Glare, had been great, stating: “We’ve been doing well. Though I played only three games with him (Finley) this year, we played together last year, so we know each other’s game.”

The five-eight has been switched from his traditional role to the chief playmaking position (half-back) by coach Paul Aiton to steer the ship, direct the flow of the traffic, and bark orders on the field.

“I’m now moving to the half-back position, which means I’ll have to direct the team, control the plays, and execute our structures put in by the coach. I just have to lead the boys and tell them where and when to be on the field,” the Engan said.

The refreshed and energized Joshua Lau looks forward to leading the SP Brewery-sponsored PNG Hunters on Sunday (10th August) when they host the last-placed Western Clydesdales at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
