The Kone Storms pulled off a historic 18-8 victory over the Ijivitari Butterflies in the Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) 76th Grand Final to claim their first premiership on Sunday, 5th October, 2025, at Santos National Football Stadium.
After failing a couple of times to secure the elusive silverware, the renewed and determined Kone Storms came with all guns blazing in the 2025 PRL competition and bagged their inaugural trophy, ending the club’s 15-year title drought.
Being in the prime position the whole season, the Kone Storms lived up to their name and exerted their dominance in the first half, registering 2 tries and leading the Butterflies with a 12-2 margin at the break.
However, the Storms let their guards down in the second stanza due to ill-discipline and ball security. They regrouped in the final quarter of the match and scored their third try, but the Butterflies responded with a consolation try to end the game.
Kone Storms’ explosive half-back and versatile playmaker, Jeremiah Ben, made his presence felt on the pitch, steering the Kone club to their first PRL premiership glory and scooping the Player of the Match, as well as the Best Back of the Year.
The elated Kone Storms’ coach, Garry Mana, said: “My boys have been dominant the whole season and maintained their performance from the playoffs all the way to the grand final, and won the first title for our club.”
Coach Mana credited Jeremiah Ben’s outstanding leadership and performance, including the 17 strong men in purple, for their courageous win. Kone Storms had double celebrations, with their U20 Boys also claiming the top honors.
The coach also acknowledged the Kone Storms’ sponsors, including their families and fans, for their constant support over the years, which finally culminated in the club’s first-ever premiership success in the PRL Men’s Premier Grade Division.
