The PNG Hunters front-rower Seal Kalo is anticipating playing the first preseason trial on Sunday, 15 February 2026, when the SP Brewery-sponsored side leaves for Cairns to meet the Northern Pride at Stan Williams Park.
Kalo made his debut for the Hunters in 2023 and has been a regular in the team since, especially playing an important role from the bench.
After three months of rigorous preseason training, the soft-spoken prop said he is prepared to run on the pitch and lead the young ones, particularly the forwards.
“Camp has been good. We’ve got plenty of new boys coming in, so we are working on building our combinations and improving in the areas that we have been lacking from last season,” he stated.
Kalo added: “For me personally, I don’t talk too much, so I need to improve my communication. Coach Paul Aiton and the coaching staff encourage me to improve in that area.”
The prop explained that with the new boys coming through the National Youth Competition (NYC), the senior players in the Hunters, like himself, have a role to mentor them.
“Those of us who have been in the Hunters for some years need to pass our knowledge to the emerging talent and help them become better players,” he said.
The Southern Highlander brought energy from the bench last season, and he hopes to maintain that impact this season, starting with the trial.
“I’m motivated to continue doing my job from the bench and maintain the standard set by the starting forwards,” he said.
With Goroka hosting a historic Hostplus Cup trial on February 22nd, Kalo mentioned that he could not wait to play the upcoming match in the Eastern Highlands capital.
“It’s going to be a different experience. My body is alright, and I’m looking forward to it,” he expressed.
