The Jonah Kautu Academy (JKA) commenced its 2026 Pikinini Rugby Training today (March 21st) at Sir John Guise Stadium Multi-Purpose Oval.
Jonah Kautu, a former PNG Pukpuk, established the academy two years ago, aiming to develop and nurture the next generation of rugby union players in the country.
Today’s event brought together over 30 kids, whose ages range from 6 to 14. The kids were taken through light training sessions and played fun games.
JKA runs U6, U8, U10, U12, and U14 categories comprising both girls and boys, who are eager to learn and develop their rugby skills.
Coach Petero Sirvese Kilori gave an update on the program, stating: “The Jonah Kautu Academy is running into its third season now, with our official program for 2026 starting today.
“Today is the first day, and the turnout was impressive. We had a good number of kids with their parents turning up.
“The last two years, we picked up very well. We finished last year on a high note, and we look forward to running another successful year.
“The number of kids participating from its inception till today has increased, which shows that we are heading in the right direction.”
Kilori confirmed that the program for this year would run for three to five months, depending on their schedules.
Mr. Kilori thanked JKA Director Jonah Kautu, the coaches, and the kids' parents for their participation and support, hoping to deliver another productive, fulfilling year.
He also thanked the sponsors, NiuPower and Milo, as well as media houses, such as Sports Tok Magazine, EMTV, NBC, TVWAN, The National, Post Courier, and other media outlets for coverage.
The JKA Pikinini Rugby program will be held every Saturday at the aforementioned venue, with the number of participants likely to increase each session.
