The Iron Chief Club of NCD Boxing will be the host for Sunday’s (tomorrow) game at the Enga Combat Kickboxing Club Gym, Hohola Port Moresby. This weekend will be the 6th competition staged since its establishment and will continue until November.
The tournament is an armature weekly event purposely to groom up-coming young talents as well as lead-up tournaments for Boxing Team NCD in preparation for the PNG Games in December.
Speaking as the manager and coordinator of the tournament, Junior Kauko Raka a professional boxer and the head coach for team Raka Boxing Clubs said that this event is also to improve the standard of armature boxing in NCD and is urging all Boxing Clubs in NCD to train and bring their boxers to compete in the ‘NCD Beginners Tournament’.
As a professional and experienced boxer who has recently participated in one of his international fights in Vietnam, Raka is urging all clubs to participate as he aims to improve the standard of armature boxing in NCD and outside centers as well.
“I would like to request all the clubs in NCD to train their boxers and bring them into our weekly competitions and then we can help to change the standard of armature boxing clubs in NCD,” said Junior Kauko Raka.
“The whole idea of hosting these weekly tournaments is to develop boxing and change its standard,” said Raka.
“Also, I want all the NCD Clubs to work together with Raka Boxing Club and then we will work together to develop boxing in NCD before going out to outside Provinces”
He also stressed the requirements of boxers who wish to become a professional.
“Also, before our boxers take the international stage, they must have more than a hundred fights before international stages or about 300 fights in armature before going professional.”
It is his aim to see PNG Boxers competing internationally so that is why he is doing this.
There are a total of about 15 clubs around Port Moresby competing at the moment such as Raka, Lions, and Iron Chief Boxing Club, this Sunday’s host. The tournaments are managed and coordinated by Raka Boxing Club.
