The SP PNG Hunters have resumed Block 2 of their preseason training this week following a short respite during the Christmas holidays and the New Year’s period.
After week 9 of a grueling three-month Block 1 training, the Hunters began their week 10 session with a renewed focus and energy, slowly building up momentum ahead of the proper season.
In block 1 of their preseason training, the club focused primarily on building fitness, skill foundations, player combinations, team unity, and fine-tuning specific aspects of their game through high-intensity sessions and match simulations.
Following the conclusion of block 1, a couple of players were released due to disciplinary issues and fitness level, while the bulk of the squad retained their spots for block 2 training.
Out of the initial 47-man train-on squad, approximately 35 players are in contention for the top 30 spots, with the final team expected to be announced before the proper season begins.
The squad comprises a blend of returning players and newcomers from the first block, giving coach Paul Aiton and his coaching staff options to finalize the cream of the crop.
Several players from the previous seasons, including key spine players, have left for overseas engagements or other reasons, creating opportunities for emerging talent to fill the void.
With only seven weeks remaining, the Hunters are ramping up their preparations ahead of the 2026 Queensland Hostplus Cup season that officially kicks off in March.
