The SP PNG Hunters completed their game-mode session and are preparing to meet the Northern Pride in the Hostplus Cup preseason trial on Sunday, 15 February 2026, at Stan Williams Park, Cairns.
Following three months of intense, rigorous training sessions covering three blocks or phases, the SP Brewery-sponsored club is gearing up for its first preseason trial ahead of the proper season in March.
Speaking to the media after the game-mode session today (February 12th), the PNG Hunters assistant coach Enoch Maki said the preparation had been great, and the team is tracking well for the trial.
“The preparation has been good for our first trial in Cairns. We’ve had a light preparation working with the boys, so they are ready to go. So far, so good,” Maki explained.
The Hunters had their internal-opposed session last week and are looking to build on that momentum when they square off with the Northern Pride this weekend.
The team comprises returning players and newcomers, with Maki stating: “We are taking Carlos Lung, Joel Gena, Myles Banam, Bruce Bawase, and others to Cairns. I can’t wait to see them play.
“It’s a first hit out for us. Our main focus is to play a simple game and stick to the basics. We want the boys to play simple footy and have fun.”
Hunters stalwart Ila Alu will captain the team, backed by a few experienced players like Jamie Mavoko, Sanny Wabo, and Seal Kalo, to name a few, including the support from the new kids on the block.
Maki added that the forward pack featuring Himson Ulalom, Manisa Kai, Zebedy Kip, and Jordan Steven are up for the challenge in leading the team upfront.
A 20-man squad will travel to Cairns, with Maki describing the mix of youth and experience bringing flair and excitement to the team.
Injury-wise, Joshua Mire, Elijah Roltinga, and a couple of players are in the rehabilitation process and hope to recover before the proper season kicks off.
Adding to the excitement, the Hunters will host a historic trial match against the Ipswich Jets the following weekend (February 22nd) in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, at the National Sports Institute (NSI).
The PNG Hunters will play two preseason trials only, rest for a week, and shift their focus to the proper season on March 8th. They will host the Central Queensland Capras in the opening round of the 2026 Hostplus Cup at Santos National Football Stadium.
