The Hekari United FC put their feet down and smashed the Central Coast FC with a 3-0 win on the opening day of the 2025 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Men's Champions League on Monday, March 31st, at the Solomon Islands National Stadium in Honiara.
Brazilian import Lucas Santos put Hekari on the front foot following his free kick outside of the penalty box, which saw the goalkeeper off guard and the ball find the back of the net in the 12th minute of play.
After that goal by Santos, it was a seesawing affair as both sides fought for ball possession and field territory. Central Coast had a few chances of scoring an equalizer but Hekari defended their goal mouth, leaving the half-time score at 1-0.
The eventual player of the match Joe Joseph extended the MRDC sponsored-team lead in the 53rd minute when he pounced on the loose ball to score.
As the game wore down, Santos placed the ball to Gogi Wally who tricked the defender and struck the ball in the penalty box to seal the deal, giving the Jerry Allen-coached outfit a much-needed head start.
With the winning momentum on their back, the Hekari United FC are looking forward to facing the Ifira Blackbird of Vanuatu on Thursday, April 3rd.
