Heavenly Paul becomes first female to officiate at DEM Cup

The PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNG NRLC) and Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) are proud to announce that Heavenly Paul will officiate her first-ever senior men’s matches in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup in round 4 this weekend, becoming the first female referee to do so at this level of competition in the country.

Heavenly’s journey began as a player in 2012 before transitioning into refereeing in 2022, driven by her determination to step forward and contribute to the game in a new capacity.

She has since built strong experience across Port Moresby Rugby League competitions, including the Moresby Northwest League, having served as a touch judge in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup while also officiating in the Santos Cup and the PNG National Youth Competition, as well as the grand finals in both competitions last year.

Now, with the opportunity to take control on the big stage, Heavenly shared: “This will be my debut in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup, and I look forward to creating history as the first female referee to officiate in the country’s national men’s competition. I am excited for the challenge ahead.”

She added: “My message to young girls and former women rugby league players is that match officiating is another way of contributing to the game. It is not just about playing. There are so many other opportunities to continue in the game as well, like becoming a referee.”

Pathways & Performance General Manager and former NRL Referee, Tony Archer, congratulated Heavenly on her achievement to make her debut in officiating the country’s top-flight domestic competition.

“Heavenly’s achievement is a significant milestone not only for her but also for all women aspiring to make their mark in rugby league,” Archer said.

“By stepping onto the field as the first female referee in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup, she’s breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of women to continue pursuing their dreams, both on and off the field.

“We are proud of the work, dedication, and commitment of Heavenly over the last 3 seasons. She has earned her opportunity to be selected as a referee in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup this weekend.”

The PNG NRLC and PNGRFL remain committed to creating opportunities for both men and women in rugby league, fostering an inclusive environment that brings out the very best in everyone involved in the game.
