The spiritual home of Port Moresby Australian Rules Football League (AFL), Colts Oval, is set to host the A Reserve Men’s and Senior Men’s Grand Finals on Saturday, 18th October 2025, with a bumper crowd expected to turn up.
The Bombers and Magpies were declared dual premiers last season following a draw. The Gerehu men had an outstanding season by topping the standings this year, while the Gereka lads had a mixed season but managed to reach the big dance.
Following their respective victories against the West Eagles and Lamana Dockers in the preliminary finals last weekend, the Bombers and Magpies are hungry to stake their claim for the ultimate prize this weekend.
Speaking to the media yesterday (16th October), Gereka Bombers’ captain Amua Pirika said their preparations had been good and they are looking forward to facing their rivals, the Gerehu Magpies.
“Our preparation is going really well. We have been working hard throughout the season. Our boys have performed really well in reaching the grand final. We have been here for three straight years (grand final), but we did not complete two grand finals, so we hope to win this one,” Pirika said.
Gerehu Magpies’ captain Norman Ausapa said the team had a solid season and were fortunate to book their ticket in the decider, with the Magpies recovering and looking fresh to go against the determined Bombers.
“We had a solid season, with the boys committing themselves and playing hard to reach the grand final. It’s a good feeling. We had injuries and challenges during the season, but we managed to come this far,” Ausapa said.
Skipper Ausapa added that winning the grand final would mean so much to the players and their families, including the loyal fans and Gerehu community, who stood behind the team throughout the season and over the years.
Both Bombers and Magpies boast a couple of former and current PNG Mosquitoes (Mozzies) players, which makes this grand final interesting and unpredictable. The Mozzies' seasoned players' experience will come to the fore on game day.
The captains of Bombers and Magpies appealed to the fans to turn in droves to root for their respective teams, urging everyone to show sportsmanship and support in the true spirit of the game, regardless of the result.
Kicking off the proceedings, the University Tigers will meet the Gordons Kokofas in the A Reserve grand final, while the Gereka Bombers will lock horns with the Gerehu Magpies in the Senior Men’s decider to wrap up the POM AFL 2025 season.
