Gena set to debut for Hunters

Promising playmaker, Joel Gena, is stoked to make his debut for the PNG Hunters when the SP Brewery-sponsored club hosts the Central Queensland Capras in Round 1 of the Hostplus Cup on Sunday, 8 March 2026, at Santos National Football Stadium, Port Moresby.

Following an outstanding season with the Lae Snax Tigers in 2025, where the Lae-based team went on to claim the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup (DEM Cup), Gena was scouted by the Hunters in the off-season. 

Competing among emerging and established halves, Gena delivered two impressive performances in the preseason trials against the Northern Pride and Ipswich Jets, convincing Paul Aiton and his coaching staff to cement the five-eight position. 

The soft-spoken playmaker admitted that it was challenging at first to adapt to the Hunters’ system, but as the preseason training progressed, he had learned so much and enjoyed training with his teammates.

“The preseason has been tough, especially in the first two to three weeks. However, as time went on, I got used to the standard and enjoyed training with the boys,” Gena said. 

The Simbu man outlined his goals with the Hunters this season: “I have to stay injury-free, make the final cut, and help the Hunters win the premiership.” 

He thanked coach Aiton and the Hunters' management for having faith in him, as well as the coaches who had mentored and guided him over the years. He also acknowledged his family and fans, particularly his uncle, who has been supportive in his career since day one. 

As a rookie, Gena understands the pressure involved in playing at a competitive second-tier competition like the Queensland Cup. However, he is ready for the challenge, aspiring to leave his mark this year.

The debutant will partner experienced half-back Jamie Mavoko, while forming combinations with dummy-half Tapia Solu and fullback Sanny Wabo in the spine.
