Fiji opens Pacific Championships with a statement win over Cook Islands

ree

The Fiji Bati kicked off their campaign to a flying start after outclassing the Cook Islands Aitu with a 44-24 victory in the Pacific Bowl Championships series opener on Saturday, 18th October 2025, at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

Fullback Jahream Bula had a memorable afternoon to remember, tearing the Cook Islands’ defense to shreds in the first half and becoming the first Fijian player to score 4 tries in a Test Match. Bula bagged 3 tries in 12 minutes and added his fourth to give Fiji a big 28-6 lead at half-time.

Fiji lost their momentum in the second half, and Aitu showed a fighting spirit to close the margin by grabbing 3 tries, but the Bati’s relentless defense stopped the Cook Islanders from making any comeback to steal the win.

The high-flying Fiji Bati showcased their attacking flair and teamwork, grinding out a comprehensive victory over the courageous Kukis to begin the three-game series tournament with a big win.

Fiji Bati coach Wise Kativerata blooded five debutants alongside seasoned players led by captain Tui Kamikamica and Michael Jennings, including rising talents Jahream Bula and Sunia Turuva, expressing satisfaction with the result.

“It’s a great win, which was a good start for the campaign. We had 5 debutants, giving them a taste of what it’s like to play for the Fiji Bati,” Kativerata said.

“We have a great leadership group who have been doing well in the NRL, led by skipper Tui Kamikamica, who is a good influence for the young kids.”

Coach Kativerata added that though he was proud of his men’s commanding win, he admitted that they would need to work on their ruck speed when they meet the PNG Kumuls.

While the Cook Islands Aitu lost to the strong Fijian side by a huge margin, the Cook Islands Moanas (women’s team) smashed the PNG Orchids in the opening match of the double-header fixture.

Meanwhile, Fiji will rest for two weeks and meet the PNG Kumuls on November 1st, while the Cook Islands face the Kumuls this Saturday (25th October) at Santos National Football Stadium.
