The FC Wantoks pulled off a dominant 4-0 victory over the Rutz FC to win the 2025 NCD Governor’s Cup Soccer Tournament yesterday afternoon (30th December) at the University of Papua New Guinea Vice-Chancellor’s Oval.
Just under five minutes of play, Solomon Rani opened the scoring with a powerful 20-meter strike, and striker Leo Rue scored the brace, putting FC Wantoks in front with a 3-0 lead at the break.
Rutz FC shifted into second gear and tightened their defence in the second half, but FC Wantoks managed to break Rutz FC's unstable defence, with first-half double goal scorer Leo Rue icing the game with a 4-0 scoreline.
Banking on the experience of PNG Kapuls’ duo Solomon Rani and Daniel Joe, the FC Wantoks used their speed upfront and tactical precision to punish the disjointed Rutz FC outfit with a commanding win.
Despite the big deficit, Rutz FC did not give up and competed until the final whistle, holding the high-flying FC Wantoks to a single goal in the second stanza.
Being the first-time participants of the annual NCD Governor’s Cup, the FC Wantoks came with all guns blazing and took the soccer tourney by storm, ultimately being crowned the new champions.
In addition, the presentation will be held on Friday (2nd January 2026) at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium. FC Wantoks will pick up K15,000 plus the Cup, while Rutz FC will receive K10,000, 21 BC FC will collect K7,000, and the 4th team will go home with K5,000.
Meanwhile, in the women's grand final, Mosama FC edged out Tupuru FC in the extra-time penalty shootout with a 4-3 margin. Mosama will receive K10,000 and the Cup, Tupuru FC will collect K7,000, Bomana Wild Duck will settle for K5,000, and FC Sisters will get K4,000.
