The D8 Mosquitoes defeated the Koita Cowboys with a 16-8 victory in their Preliminary Final match of the inaugural KCK Rigo Rice Cup on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at Bava Park.
The Mosquitoes have put on a compelling case in the 2024-2025 first-ever edition of the KCK Rigo Rice Cup, becoming the number one team to book a ticket in the biggest stage of the off-season competition.
A physical and intense first-half battle saw the Cowboys register their opening try in just under 5 minutes of play. The Mosquitoes responded in the ensuing set and scored 2 tries to take a 10-4 lead at the break.
The Mosquitoes maintained their rhythm and crossed over the line in the tenth minute of the second half, increasing their lead to 16-4. After that try, both sides struggled to score points due to repeated ball-handling errors and ill-discipline.
However, with a lion's share of possession in the dying minutes, the Cowboys managed to score a consolation try, ending the tightly-contested match in a 16-8 grandstand finish.
The elated D8 Mosquitoes coach, Wanpis Kaupa, was proud of his boys, heaping praise on their hard work and determination to reach the grand final.
“I'm so happy for my boys (D8 Mosquitoes). They have worked hard to come this far, so I give credit to them,” Kaupa expressed.
“Though the grand final will be tough, we are prepared to face our opponent. I'm excited to see what’s going to happen on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, in the second preliminary showdown, the Mono Mutrus Brothers thumped the Tare Nation with a convincing 28-6 win. The stage is now set for the D8 Mosquitoes to face the Mono Mutrus Brothers in the First Leg of the KCK Rigo Rice Cup Grand Final on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, at Bava Park.
