Coaches Get Accreditation

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) recently conducted a BETTER Development Coaching Accreditation clinic in Port Moresby, certifying the attendees following the program's conclusion.

The Central Dabaris, Gulf Isou, and Port Moresby Vipers' coaching staff, including staff from National Capital District (NCD) and Central Academy, attended the workshop and learned about the intricacies of coaching and mentoring.

The PNGRFL thanked the coaching staff of the respective clubs for their participation, highlighting the need for local coaches to upskill themselves in coaching clinics to meet international standards.

“Big congratulations to the coaching staff from Port Moresby Vipers, Gulf Iso, and Central Dabaris, alongside our NCD and Central Academy staff, for completing their Better Coach Accreditation successfully,” the statement said.

“This is a major step forward in strengthening the coaching foundations across Papua New Guinea rugby league, and it will play a key role in lifting coaching standards throughout the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup and across our Academy pathways.

“With more accredited coaches in the system, we are building smarter training environments, stronger player development, and a better future for the game at every level.”

The PNGRFL BETTER Development Coaching Accreditation is a national coaching program designed to strengthen and standardize coaching across rugby league in Papua New Guinea.

The program focuses on building coaches who can create safer, more organized, and more effective environments for players at all levels. Through this accreditation, coaches are trained in key areas, covering player safety, modern coaching techniques, player well-being, and the basic principles of rugby league. It also features important off-field skills - team management and data management. This helps coaches plan better, track performance, and run their programs professionally.

A major purpose of the BETTER program is to ensure that coaching standards remain consistent across all PNGRFL-recognized competitions, regardless of location or level. By rolling out the accreditation nationwide, PNGRFL is working to make sure coaches around the country are equipped with the same core knowledge and best-practice approach.

The BETTER Development Coaching Accreditation will also become a requirement for coaches involved in sanctioned national competitions, including the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup, Santos Cup, and the National Youth Competition, reinforcing the importance of accredited coaching in PNG’s top rugby league pathways.

Essentially, the BETTER program is about developing confident, qualified coaches who can help improve player development, protect athlete welfare, and lift the overall standard of rugby league in Papua New Guinea.
