Papua New Guinea international, Watson Boas, played his 100 games for the Doncaster RLFC over the weekend, where the Dons outclassed the Swinton Lions with a comprehensive 74-6 drubbing.
Boas expressed that he was fortunate to make his 100th appearance for the Dons, with the club running riot and scoring 18 unanswered tries to make the milestone man’s day extra special.
“Playing 100, 150, or 200 games is the biggest milestone for any player, and I’m glad I was able to play 100 games for the Dons,” Boas said.
“When you grow older, you take it as another game, slowly ticking some boxes and progressing in your career.
“Not many players get to play 100 games due to injury and personal matters, so it was good leading the boys and winning the game in my milestone career.”
Boas explained that when he first joined Doncaster in 2019, the club embraced him with open arms, showing confidence in his potential and signing him on a two-year deal.
“This is my final year with the club. Whether they want to re-sign me or not, the decision rests with the board. I need to play consistent footy,” he said.
“I’m happy to stay here (Doncaster) for another year and repay the club that accepted me as a stranger and made me feel part of them, and also made Doncaster city become my home away from home.”
The one-time SP PNG Hunters premiership-winning playmaker (2017) revealed that the club sets its sights on claiming the Betfred Championship and getting promotion to the Super League in the near future.
He, however, admitted that it’s a long shot to get promoted to the English top-flight competition, noting that they needed to build a formidable side in the second-tier division to be competitive in the first grade.
Doncaster has been outstanding this season, sitting second on the ladder behind the London Broncos. The Dons will face the Broncos in round 11, which features six PNG players, with Boas saying he couldn’t wait to go up against his compatriots.
Since Boas joined the Doncaster-based club in 2019, the Dons have reached the finals a few times, keeping their fingers crossed on winning this year’s Betfred Championship.
The experienced playmaker mentioned that he would like to finish his career on a high note with a championship title while anticipating settling down and working in the United Kingdom after retirement.
Boas moved to play for Doncaster from Featherstone Rovers on a loan deal in April 2019. Following that initial loan spell, he signed a permanent two-year contract with Doncaster at the end of the 2019 season, and hopes to extend his stay with the Dons.
