WNB Provincial Government shows appreciation to soccer star

Updated: Apr 29

The West New Britain Provincial Government has acknowledged national star Ramona Padio's sporting achievements in soccer through governor Sasindran Muthuvel, who presented Padio with a K5,000 cheque on Wednesday January 23, 2024, at the WNBPG in Kimbe, WNB.

Ramona Padio expressed her gratitude to Governor Muthuvel and all those who have supported her, including her family and the people of West New Britain. She emphasised the significance of the cheque and appreciated the recognition from the governor.

Padio is a member of Hekari United FC and the National Soccer team, which she captained to victory at the Pacific Games last year. She also served as the Flag Bearer for Team PNG during their trip to the Solomon Islands in November 2023.

In recognition of her accomplishments as a soccer icon, role model and her recent outstanding achievements in the Pacific Games, Governor Muthuvel presented Padio with the cheque as a token of appreciation.

Meanwhile, Padio also urged the West New Britain Government to establish a soccer team for the province, allowing talented players like herself to represent their home province in the National Soccer League (NSL).

"Currently, there is no women's soccer team in West New Britain, forcing players to join other teams or provinces to participate in the National Soccer League," Padio said.

Padio hopes that by establishing a team in the province, more young girls will be inspired to play and represent West New Britain on an international level.

Padio concluded by stating that there are many capable women who can play soccer in the province, and having local tournaments will further motivate them to pursue the sport at a higher level.
