Veitu Diro to Officiate at the 33rd SP Sports Awards

Former netball, basketball, and softball legend, Veitu Apana Diro - CBE, MBE - will be the Guest Speaker of the 33rd SP Sports Awards scheduled for June 14th, 2025, at Crowne Hotel in Port Moresby.

Veitu had a colorful and distinguished career in those three mentioned codes, representing her country with pride and winning a couple of medals for PNG. She was a force to be reckoned with in those glory days.

The tri-sports legend was not only a gifted athlete but a great mentor. After retiring, she ventured into coaching and mentored countless athletes where some have gone to represent PNG on the international stage.

Outside of the sporting arena, she was an excellent administrator, working with different sports organizations spanning more than three decades. She served in various capacities and contributed immensely to the development of sports in PNG.

The 78-year-old has done a lot for sports in PNG as a former athlete, coach, and administrator. She continues to advocate for women in sports, dedicating her time to mentoring aspiring athletes and championing equality in sports.

SP Brewery Corporate Affairs Manager, John Nilkare, paid tribute to Mrs. Diro, acknowledging her contributions to sports in PNG and congratulating her to officiate at the annual prestigious awards.

“Veitu is a South Pacific gold-medalist, representing the country in six South Pacific Games and three Pacific Mini Games,” Nilkare stated.

“She was also a core member of the Commonwealth Games General Management team, and we are thrilled to have her over for the awards night on June 14th.”

Mr. Nilkare added that they (SP Brewery Ltd) would organize a coaching session for Mrs. Diro to speak to the athletes before they leave for the Palau Pacific Mini Games next month.

“We have arranged a coaching clinic at the Taurama Aquatic Center where Veitu will inspire our young Team PNG basketball and beach volleyball athletes before they depart to Palau in June for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games,” he said.

“Veitu was a dominant force on the court as an athlete and coach, and she is honored to engage with our athletes.”

Mrs. Diro expressed her gratitude to the SP Brewery Selection Panel for nominating her to become the guest speaker of the 33rd SP Sports Awards on Saturday night, June 14th, 2025, at Crowne Hotel.
