Veari United book third straight decider

The Open Campus Veari United has made history, securing their third consecutive Grand Final after beating the UPNG Medics in the Preliminary Final of the University of Papua New Guinea Rugby League (UPNGRL) on Tuesday, 26th September. The Veari United will take on the NML Drugons in the Grand Final show-down at the UPNG Oval on Sunday, 1st October.

The Veari United have had an incredible run since their inception in the 2021 competition. That year (2021), they took on the SBPP Eagles in the decider, ending in a draw (8-8). However, the SBPP Eagles were declared the Premiers, because they scored the first point.

The 2022 Grand Final was played earlier this year, where Veari United took on the SNPS Spartans and defeated them with a 22-12 victory.

Veari United Captain and one of the founding members, Steven Moihoi Jack said it was truly satisfying to have qualified in the grand final for the third time in a row.

“Firstly, thank you to Anutu (God). I never thought I would be able to play three grand finals in UPNG. My passion for the game has always been with me since childhood.

“Coming from a rural place in Simbu where there is a limited pathway for rugby league, education has given me the chance to display the skills I have in this Premier Institution (UPNG).

“It's not about fame, it’s all about hard work, which is the foundation of our success. The satisfaction of making it to the grand final in three consecutive years beats the satisfaction of winning or losing in the grand final,” captain Moihoi expressed.

Meanwhile, the Drugons also had a historic run this season, rising as the underdogs and

making their first-ever grand final appearance on Sunday.
