The biggest bi-annual Intervarsity Vice Chancellors (VC) Cup Tournament is set to kick off on Wednesday from 19th-22nd of July at the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province. The three-day tournament will be officially launched today (Tuesday, 18th) at the UOG Campus and the matches will kick off tomorrow.
This year, the tournament is hosted by the University of Goroka and has teams from eight universities in the country. The teams are from University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), University of Technology (UOT), University of Goroka (UOG), Divine Ward University (DWU), University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) and debuting this year are the three newcomers – Pacific Adventist University (PAU), Institute of Business Studies University (IBSU), and Western Pacific University (WPU).
Four of these universities have more than one team competing in the tournament. UNRE has two teams: the UNRE Cowboys and UNRE Skip Jacks. UPNG has three teams: UPNG Pythons, UPNG Blacks and UPNG Medics. UOG has three teams: Eastern Nokondis, Nokondi Blacks and Agopea Nokondi. UOT has the highest number of teams, four: Unitech Spartans, Unitech Medics, Komodos, and Unitech Bulolo Pines. Meanwhile, DWU, PAU, WPU and IBSU have one team each: Diwai Fox, PAU, Western Warriors and IBSU Crushers.
According to Wepio Media, UOG VC Cup Coordinator Ricky Kapipi is excited and happy that the tournament is finally set to kick off.
“We have been working very hard at the beginning of the year in preparation to host our seven sister universities and their teams in order to deliver the Intervarsity Vice Chancellor's Cup here at UOG on a high note,” Kapipi said.
“We are happy that the teams are finally here. We will make it safe so that everyone can have a good time here in Goroka. I welcome all the teams and their fans to Kol Ples Goroka,” Kapipi added.
