The 2024 Capital Rugby Union (CRU) champions, the SWG Enterprise Valley Hunters, resumed their 2025 preseason training two weeks ago, hoping to go back-to-back in the title race while anticipating the season opener in April.
The Valley Hunters’ metamorphosis from cellar-dwellers to championship glory has been a remarkable story within the rugby union circle in the nation’s capital. They defied the odds and wrote history last season, claiming their maiden title after sixteen years.
With more expectations on their shoulders this season as the reigning premiers, the men from Ensisi Valley are hungrier and optimistic, setting their sights on retaining the coveted title for the second time.
Inspirational playmaker and co-captain, Jonah Tokiong, mentioned that the training for the past two weeks had been intense but exciting, knowing that they have a big task ahead of them, which is to defend their fortress.
“For us the premier team, we’ve kick-started our training for the whole week and rested for a day. Our lower divisions trained on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Our training has been going really well,” Tokiong said.
“Preseason has been a tough part of the whole season, so we are trying to get that right before anything else.”
Despite losing some of the players who won the premiership last season due to personal commitments and other reasons, a couple of new faces from the rival clubs have joined the Valley men in the preseason training, adding experience and flair to bolster the pack.
The Frank Genia-coached Valley Hunters have an insurmountable task in front of them, as they look forward to defending the prized silverware and making their presence known in the 2025 CRU campaign.
