In a highly entertaining Intervarsity men’s volleyball five-set series, the University of Technology (UoT) edged out the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) with a 3-2 win on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at UPNG’s Sports Precinct.
The match delivered high intensity in all five sets, with both sides displaying skills, determination, and hunger to make their presence known in front of the passionate supporters.
As expected, given their rivalries academically and in the sporting arena, the opening set kicked off to a flying start, with the high-flying UniTech Kundus defeating the UPNG Jets 25-19.
With strong support from the fans, UPNG bounced back and dominated the third and fourth sets, recording a 25-20 win and a 25-23 margin.
However, the men from “Rainy Lae” responded in the fourth set, securing a 25-23 victory and sealing the deal in the final set with a 25-15 scoreline.
UniTech captain Teejay Jabel stated that it was a very competitive game, praising his teammates for sticking together to get the job done.
“It was a learning process for all of us after losing a game yesterday (June 24th), so it was good to bounce back with a win,” Jabel said.
“I’ve seen a big improvement in the boys, so I’m proud of my teammates as a captain. I’m happy with the win. It was through teamwork that we were able to win the game. My boys deserved it.”
The skipper admitted that the finals would be an uphill battle, but they are prepared to leave their mark in enemy territory.
Jabel thanked the UniTech administration and SRC, the coaching staff and team management, Lae City Authority, and the fans for their support.
He mentioned that the job is not done yet, with the team hoping to win the grand final and take the trophy to Morobe’s capital.
After five exciting round-robin games, Lae’s UniTech team claimed 4 wins and tasted one loss, and looks forward to maintaining the winning streak in the finals on Friday, June 26th.
The six universities competing for the Intervarsity Volleyball tournament at UPNG are:
University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG)
