The PNG Basketball Men's team started the 2023 XVII Pacific Games on a positive note, defeating the Solomon Islands with a score of 81-34 in their first match on Saturday, November 18, 2023.

Unfortunately, they lost their second match on Sunday, November 19, to the defending gold medalist, Guam, with a score of 96-77 at the Friendship Hall in the Solomon Islands.

The game against Guam was tough for PNG, but they put up a strong fight against the reigning champions, closing the gap to the small winning margin.

Guam's influential player of the match, Jon Calloway, stated that the match was physical and tough. He congratulated PNG on their good opening fight.

"It took a lot; PNG gave us a run. It got really physical. PNG played with a lot of heart and I respect them for that," said Jon.

The 5x5 basketball events started on November 17 and will end on the 25th.
