The Pacific Palms Property Landlords dominated the PacTow Tuggers with a 17-5 victory in the annual Steamships Rugby 7s Tournament Men’s Grand Final to claim their second title on Saturday, 4th October, 2025, at Santos National Football Stadium.
PacTow Tuggers, who were last year’s Steamies rugby 7s premiers, failed to defend their crown as the PPP Landlords came with determination and stole the elusive silverware from the title holders, adding a second trophy to their cabinet.
Both teams fared exceptionally well in the round robin matches and advanced to the finals as serious title contenders. The opening 7 minutes of the first half were intense and entertaining, which saw the PPP Landlords score a solo unconverted try to lead the contest at 5-0.
The eventual premiers maintained their rhythm in the second half and scored 2 tries, keeping the Tuggers at bay. However, the defending champions found their groove and hit back with a consolation try, falling short of upsetting the PPP Landlords.
The PPP Landlords coach, David Elara, praised his players for their resilience and determination, which earned the team their second title after two years.
“It was a tough game for us, but the boys held it together and stuck to the basics to get the job done. I told the boys to make fewer errors, and the only way to win this game was holding the ball possession, which they executed well,” Elara said.
Despite being full-time employees, coach Elara said his men had sacrificed their time to train and prepare themselves for the tournament, which saw their hard work pay off.
Mr. Elara dedicated the win to the players and the Pacific Palms Property, including their families and fans, ending the 31st edition of the annual Steamies rugby 7s tourney with a trophy.
It took the Pacific Palms Property Landlords 29 years to claim their first Steamships rugby 7s title. Two years later, the men in green came with confidence and bagged their second premiership.
In addition, a total of 11 teams, featuring men’s and women’s divisions, participated in the one-day event. The women competed in touch rugby, while the men took part in rugby 7s, concluding the day on a high note.
The Pacific Palms Property Landlords took out the top honors in the men’s division, while the STC Chiefs claimed the women’s division, scooping their fifth consecutive title and becoming the undisputed queens.
Meanwhile, the Steamies Rugby 7s tournament was established in 1994 by Steamships Trading Limited. This one-day event for rugby 7s and touch is a long-standing tradition held annually by the company in PNG. The tournament aims to promote health, fitness, and inter-company networking, serving as a fixture that unites employees and fosters friendly competition.
