The Port Moresby Racquets Club (POMRC) is hosting the Skel Rice Junior Challenge Series that will run throughout the year 2024.
William Aisi, POM Racquets Tennis Director, stated that the POMRC series would continue for 12 months, with playoffs scheduled for the thirteenth month.
Aisi mentioned that the April series started on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, concluding the grand finals on Sunday, May 5th.
This significant series of tournaments feature categories of under 8s, U10s, U12s, U14s, and U16s. Aisi explained that these tournaments aimed to gauge young players.
“From this tournament, we will start our ranking system. We'll have a system where kids in Moresby or NCD have a ranking system in place so we know what their skill levels are,” he explained.
Additionally, the tournament is a lead-up for the national representative players, preparing them for the Pacific Oceania Junior Championship (POJC) in Fiji from July 4th - 14th.
Aisi mentioned that they would also focus on team selections for the Western Pacific Regional Championship in Fiji in February, 2025.
The PNG Tennis Association will host a tournament in November this year to select the final PNG Team to travel to Fiji.
