PNG defeated Samoa with an 87-72 score-line in the men’s 5x5 basketball clash on Tuesday, November 21, redeeming themselves with a sweet victory.
PNG started their campaign strongly in the opener on Friday, November 17, triumphing over the host nation, Solomon Islands, with an 81-34 margin.
However, they failed to maintain the rhythm in their second match on Monday, November 20, going down to the current champions, Guam, with a 96-77.
With a chance of bagging gold medal hanging by a thread, the determined red, black and gold army regrouped, found their mojo and bounced back into the winner’s circle, defeating Samoa with an 87-72 win to keep their final’s hopes alive.
As the clock races to the finals, pressure will be mounted on PNG and other teams to put their feet forward, endeavoring to stake their claim for the title.
The 5x5 men’s basketball tournament will end on Saturday, November 25.
