The Papua New Guinea Women's Cricket team, known as Kumul Petroleum PNG Lewas are ready for the International Cricket Council Twenty20 (T20) Women's East Asia Pacific Qualifier, which will take place in Vanuatu from September 1st to 8th.
Under the guidance of Julia Price, a cricket coach who is funded by PacificAus Sports, the Lewas have undergone training sessions in preparation for the EAP T20 competition.
Coach Price expressed her excitement about working with the team again, having previously traveled with them to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) competition last year.
According to Price, the Lewas are an exciting group of players, featuring a mix of experienced and young talents. They currently hold the 11th position in the ICC Women's T20 Global Rankings, ahead of all other Associate Member teams and even one Full Member team, Zimbabwe. Price believes that the Lewas have the potential to continue improving and compete in major events.
Additionally, Cricket PNG organized the PacificAus Sports Activation Fun Day at Ela Beach, which marked the end of the PacificAus Sports training program.
During this event, coach Price and the Lewas conducted cricket drills and taught cricket skills to children from Pari, Taurama, and Tubusereia villages.
Captain Kaia Arua Boe expressed gratitude to coach Price and PacificAus Sports for their continued support in funding professional cricket coaches to maintain the team's high level of skills.
The T20 EAP Women's Qualifier will feature national teams from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the host country, Vanuatu.
The winner of the qualifier will secure a spot in the 2024 ICC Women's T20 Global Qualifier.
