The Papua New Guinea women’s National Rugby union, the Cassowaries are set for the
Oceania Rugby Women’s 15s Champion as they left to travel to Gold Coast yesterday.
This year will mark their fifth appearance at the Oceania Rugby Women’s 15s Champions.
The Championship will also feature other National Womens teams from Pacific nations
including Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
The event will be held over three match days on 26th May, 30 May and 4 June.
For the fixtures, in round one,the first match will see PNG Cassowaries to take on the 2022
premier champions, the Fiji Fijianas on Friday May 26 at 5:30pm.
While round two will see the Cassowaries go head-to-head with Tonga on Tuesday May 30th
at 7:30pm.
In the final round, Cassowaries will take on Manusina, from Samoa on Sunday, June 4th at
2:00 pm.
The thirty-one-player team of PNG representatives will play with the hope to bag their first
international victory. Even more, there is much pressure for Cassowaries to win after they
were crushed with a whooping 152-0 scoreline by the Fijianas last year.
Furthermore, this tournament offers an avenue for Pacific players to be selected for the
2023 Oceania Women’s Combine in August later this year. It will also enable players to earn
a selection and a PacificAus Sports scholarship to play in Australia’s Super W. However, the
real catch here is that the winners of this tournament will earn a spot in the inaugural World
Rugby WXV competition that starts in Europe in October this year.
