Piku Appointed New Head of Styles

Press Release

The East Gate Karate Academy’s Chief Instructor Sensei Julius Piku has been appointed as the new Head of Shotokan Karate Budokai in Papua New Guinea. He was endorsed by the founder of SKB Style Sensei Trevor Roberts of Australia.

Piku’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the lineage of dedicated practitioners of both SKB and Shotokan Karate, replacing his predecessor and mentor Sensei Carl Mari Bera. Mentored by Mari 'Bera since his teenage years, Piku has flourished under his guidance.

Known for his technical prowess and tactical genius in the ring, Piku has not only been a formidable karate champion in PNG but he is also the most-capped PNG Karate elite athlete, representing his country on the international stage on numerous occasions.

Mari ‘Bera’s mentorship extended beyond the dojo, as Piku took on roles such as Karate National Coach under the endorsement from the PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC).

His leadership skills were further honed in administrative roles within the local club, Rock Dojo, and the PNG Karate-Do Federation Incorporation, where Piku served as Secretary.

With Carl Sensei’s blessing, Piku went on to establish the East Gate Karate Academy, acquiring the title of ‘Sensei’ and continuing the legacy of excellence and dedication. Piku acknowledged Trevor Roberts Sensei and the management team for their recognition and trust.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment and look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that Shotokan Karate Budokai is known for,” he said.

He also extended his heartfelt thanks to Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei for his unwavering support and exceptional service.

“Mr. Mari ‘Bera’s contributions have been invaluable. His dedication and passion have set a high standard for all of us, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” he added.

“Our journey would not have been possible without the backing of our dedicated members and generous sponsors. Your support has been the backbone of our success.”

As the Shotokan Karate Budokai community in PNG embraces this new era, there is a collective sense of optimism and excitement for the future under Julius Piku Sensei’s leadership.

“We extend a warm invitation to other Shotokan Karate dojos, martial arts clubs, and individuals who wish to join us,” Sensei Piku said.
