Piggies start strong

The Fincorp University Piggies have begun their 2024 Pepsi-Moni Plus Capital Rugby Union (CRU) competition on a fiery start, registering two big wins on the trot.

In the opening round of the CRU competition on April 27th, the resurgent Uni Piggies demolished the Theodist Marlins with a comprehensive victory of 45-5 at Bava Park in Port Moresby.

The Piggies backed up their impressive round 1 performance in round 2 on May 5th, annihilating the Chemcare Juggernauts with a resounding 45-5 scoreline.

Coach John Pangatana was impressed with his team’s strong performances in the two rounds but admitted that they had a big season ahead.

“We’ve had two big wins but it’s only the second round. The Juggernauts are a strong side but we just wanted to win and we’ve shown that,” coach Pangatana said.

“We are still going through the process of identifying our players for the season ahead. The players in our club are challenging themselves to earn a spot in the final team.

“It’s all about playing positive rugby. We’ve promoted a lot of our juniors to the lower grades and premier division to fill in the gaps. The good thing about our club this year is our depth.

“We are looking to prepare for some of the bigger teams like the Harlequins and Brothers. We are doing all the groundwork now in preparation for these two heavyweights and looking ahead of the season.”

The undefeated Fincorp-sponsored University Piggies are looking forward to keeping the momentum going and maintaining their winning streak in round 3.
