The National Rugby League-Papua New Guinea (NRLPNG) in partnership with Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL), PNGAus Partnership, Team Up, and Department of Education, hosted the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex today (March 8th).
International Women’s Day has been celebrated annually by NRLPNG and its partners, showing respect, recognition, and appreciation to all the women in PNG and across the world, complemented by fun games.
Joining the host (NRLPNG) to observe the event were other ‘Sports for Development’ partners - such as the Hook for Life (hockey), and Gymbad (Gymnastics & Badminton) - with the theme: "For all women and girls; Rights, Equality and Empowerment.”
The theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights and opportunities for all, aiming to inspire the next generation, particularly young women and girls, to become agents of change.
Over 100 female students from different secondary schools in the National Capital District (NCD) and the staff of the organizations aforementioned converged at the Indoor Complex to play some fun games and celebrate International Women’s Day in style.
NRLPNG League Development Officer for NCD, Lancy Laki Ulkambane said it was great to hang out with her colleagues and other partners of NRLPNG to celebrate the IWD with the students.
“It’s good that we hold the IWD every year to recognize and appreciate the women who have paved the way forward for us,” Ulkambane stated.
“What men can do, women can do as well. We want to break barriers and instill good values and principles in the girls.
“The main purpose of hosting this event was to invite the girls from various secondary schools in NCD to partake in our programs and enjoy themselves.
“After participating in the fun games, we shared uplifting and encouraging words with the participants and celebrated the IWD, ending the day on a positive note.”
